Common reward program mistakes
Spending to earn, ignoring expiry, redeeming at the worst rate, and treating pending points as cash.

Most people do not lose money because they picked the “wrong” program. They lose it on small, repeatable mistakes: buying extras to hit a bonus, letting points die, or redeeming gift cards at a poor rate because the catalog looked exciting.
Mistakes that show up constantly
- Spending $80 extra to earn $10 in points.
- Ignoring inactivity expiry on airline and store programs.
- Redeeming merchandise instead of statement credit when the catalog is marked up.
- Carrying a high-interest balance because “the points will cover it.” They will not.
- Opening too many accounts and missing the one that actually posts.
