Are reward programs worth it?
A simple test: would you buy this anyway, does the math beat the fee, and will you redeem before expiry?

A program is worth it when it pays you for behavior you already planned. It is not worth it when you spend extra, pay an annual fee you cannot recoup, or let points expire. Most “best rewards” lists skip that test.
The three-question test
- Would I buy this on this timeline without the points?
- After fees, is the reward still better than a no-fee cashback alternative?
- Do I have a reminder to redeem before expiry?
| Situation | Usually worth it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2% cashback on groceries you already buy | Yes | Simple, liquid, no catalog trap |
| Premium travel card you will not fly enough to beat the fee | No | Fee is a first-year tax |
| Supermarket points that expire in 6 months | Only if you shop there weekly | Expiry is a silent loss |
| Receipt-scan app for $2 a month | Maybe | Time and privacy may cost more |
Important considerations
- Opportunity cost: a complicated program you ignore is worse than a boring 1.5% card you use.
- Data: some “free” programs are paid for with purchase history.
- Mental overhead: five logins is a tax. One system you actually open wins.
